Exploring More Options

 

There are several more options that you can set for your new popup window. One that you may have noticed on the last page in the Open Browser dialog box is the Open Centered option.You may not see this option in yours, We will get to this one in a minute.

First let's explore the others and see samples of just what they do.

Attributes

Click the various thumbnails to see the effect of these options. You can use any combination of these together.

Navigation Bar
Location Bar
Menu Bar
Scrollbars
Status Bar
Resize Handles

Popups aren't for pictures only. Anything that can be inserted into an HTML page can also be implemented into a new window. Click here for Sample

Window Name

The popup window can be named in case you want to target it with links or control it with Javascript. You can not have spaces in the name.

Open Centered

This option allows you to open the new browser window centered. It is not included with the original versions of Dreamweaver 3 and 4. It is an extension. The 4Level OpenBrowser Window has the ability to center the window as well as position it anywhere on the screen.

In order to install this extension you will have to download and install the Extension Manager from Macromedia first. There are instructions on the website on how to do this. It's very easy. The extension manager ver 1.5 is available from Macromedias website.

Opinion

New browser windows, or "Popups" can make your site hard to navigate, irritating and/or just an intolerable place to be. Use them sparingly and with purpose and they can enhance your site and make it a wonderful place to spend some time.
